The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. The BRICS countries share a strong desire and commitment towards closer cooperation to ensure collective sustainable development over the years.
Science, technology and innovation (STI) are vital driving forces to tackle global challenges and achieve the SDGs. As the new paradigm of scientific discovery, big data provides increasing opportunities to stimulate the advancement of STI and support to achieve the sustainable development goals. The BRICS framework provides an effective platform to enhance mutual trust, develop communication and collaboration. Many productive joint programs in STI, as one of the priorities, have been carried out under this framework.
Within this context, China proposed to organize a BRICS Forum on Big Data for Sustainable Development in support of the 14th BRICS Summit. The Forum will be hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Academy of Science of South Africa, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Indian National Science Academy, and co-organized by the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals and the Aerospace Information Research Institute, CAS.
The forum is scheduled to take place on April 26-27, 2022, at 19:00-21:00 PM (UTC+8), both onsite and online, with Beijing, China, as the main physical venue. The subject of the forum will be "Big Data for Sustainable Development". The themes of the forum will include Big Data in Support of Food Security and Poverty Alleviation, Digital Economy, Sustainable Urban Development, Climate Actions and Disaster Reduction, and Biodiversity Conservation. Around 300-500 participants including government officials, renowned academics, researchers, engineers, policymakers, stakeholders of the BRICS countries, and representatives from international organizations will attend the forum.
The forum will provide an opportunity to further strengthen the dialogues on global sustainable development among BRICS countries, to promote the cooperation mechanism of BRICS countries in achieving sustainable development goals, and to enhance international scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation among BRICS countries, so as to jointly address the sustainable development challenges faced by BRICS countries and even by the world, and contribute to the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
